Why volunteer?

Volunteering offers students the opportunity for personal development and to make a real contribution to student life and the community. As a volunteer you can:

  • learn new skills
  • gain useful experience
  • enhance your CV & career prospects
  • help make a real difference

Students' Union Volunteering Opportunities (S.U.V.O.) offers students the chance to join in a range of volunteer activities and to gain recognition for their contributions.

SUUG VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Student Reps
  • Welfare Reps
  • RAG Week
  • Sarky Cutt
  • Community volunteering

Volunteers receive volunteer recognition certificates for  all the time  they contribute and certificates for all training sessions attended. As well as volunteer recognition, valuable practical experience and transferable skills, volunteers also benefit from enhanced CV and improved employment prospects. Volunteers also get the satisfaction of contributing to the quality of their student experience to the benefit themselves and their fellow students. As a SUUG Volunteer you contribute your time, energy and enthusiasm and we provide training and support.  If you have previous experience that's good, but not necessary. We will provide you with training and the opportunity to contribute. You decide what time you can contribute and what you want to get out of their time as a SUUG Volunteer.

Student Reps

Student Reps are volunteers who represent their fellow students by acting as  a student voice on all aspects of the student experience covered by the University's Students' Charter. They provide feedback from students and to the Students' Union and help feedback information from the SU to their fellow students.  They help the Students' Union to provide constructive feedback and suggestions to the University to improve the University experience for all students.

The University Students' Charter outlines the level and quality of services that you can expect to receive, as a student at the University. It covers what you can expect from the University and what the University expects from students when applying to the University, studying at the University, living at the University and campus facilities.

Student Reps attend Student Forum consultative meetings to discuss Student Charter issues with their fellow volunteers and the elected SU Officers. They can also attend Student Rep skills training sessions and briefings on Student Charter issues from elected officers and the SUUG Advice and Information Service. Student Rep views from the Student Forums and questionnaires are fed back to the Students' Representative Council to inform Union policy and representation activities.
