The Advice and Information Service (AIS) recognises that an Equal Opportunities Policy can only be effective if it is understood by all members and users of the Service, and if it is incorporated into working practice and monitored regularly.
Equal Opportunities Policy
AIS is committed to creating conditions whereby every student at the university has access to advice, information and representation without discrimination on the grounds of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion, nationality, HIV status or trade union activity.

All service users will be offered advice, guidance and representation with regard to their individual needs.
Service Delivery
The range of services provided by AIS should be widely publicised to all sections of the student body in order to encourage use by all members.

Users of the service are monitored according to gender, ethnicity, student origin (i.e. Home/International/EC), age, disability, year, school, mode of study and programme of study. These statistics are analysed on a regular basis to ensure that the service is reaching as wide a range of students as possible and is targeting areas of common concern for the publication of information and campaigns.

Physical access to the service should be available at all sites; if a situation occurs were access is hindered an alternative venue for interview will be made available. The service should also publicise other means of contact, including telephone and e-mail advice as well as web based information.

Users of the service are encouraged to provide feedback, e.g. a user questionnaire. The service also publicises the fact that we appreciate and welcome feedback.

AIS will not tolerate discrimination in any form. Users of the service may utilise the Students' Union complaints procedure if they feel that discrimination has occurred.

AIS reserves the right to ask users of the service to abstain from acting in a discriminatory manner in keeping with the service's Equal Opportunity Policy.
If a service user persists in acting in a discriminatory manner, AIS reserves the right to exclude that user from access to certain adviser(s) or in serious cases from the service as a whole. The service user has the right to appeal and should do so in writing to the President of the Student Union. The President will then inform the General Manager who will conduct a thorough investigation into the appeal and inform the service user in writing of their decision.
