The University of Greenwich offers a guarantee of University-managed or approved accommodation to first year and direct entry students subject to certain conditions. Although this guarantee does not extend to continuing students, a number of places are usually available in the Halls of Residence both on campus and off-site to students in their 2nd and/or 3rd years. The Accommodation Service can also help students find housing in private sector accommodation. Full information for first year and direct entry students is available in the "Lifestyle Guide" sent to all new students and information for students continuing at the University is normally available in February and on the website at http://accommodation.gre.ac.uk.
Problems with your accommodation may arise from time to time. If you experience any difficulties, you can contact a student warden (teams of wardens reside in all University halls) or the Accommodation Service for advice and assistance.
Students in University-managed accommodation are given the choice to pay either in three instalments coinciding with the usual time that loan cheques arrive or in monthly instalments. Unfortunately, students may sometimes find it hard to pay their accommodation fees. If you are having problems, speak to the Accommodation Service, the Students' Union or Student Services - it may be possible to negotiate a new payment plan. Remember, as with all debts, the creditor - in this case the University's Accommodation Service - will be far more sympathetic to those who approach them sooner rather than later.
The University imposes sanctions on those students who build up a debt to the institution (and a debt to the Accommodation Service is seen as a debt to the University). Any student who is in arrears with their accommodation fees for more than one term (normally 3 month's fees) may have sanctions imposed on them including blocked access to the library, computing facilities and the ability to hand in coursework. Students with accommodation debts of any size will not being allowed to proceed to the next stage of their programme. Therefore, it is very important to try to negotiate an arrears payment plan before you reach that stage. Students with debts of any size will not be allowed to graduate until the debt is paid in full and may be barred from attending the commencement ceremony.
Once they have signed a contract and moved in, students can be permitted to terminate their residential agreements only under certain circumstances. In most cases, this will be restricted to those who:
- are advised by Accommodation Services that a student has approached the Service directly who would like to take over the vacant room; or
are subject to a change in status and are no longer enrolled on a programme of study (written confirmation is required).
